Disaster Relief

As Tropical Storm Fay continues to batter Florida our thoughts are with affected Pi Beta Phi members.

The Emma Harper Turner Fund
was established at the 1946 Convention. The Fund provides monthly gifts and one-time emergency grants on a confidential basis to initiated members in extreme financial need. The Fund also provides educational aid for alumnae continuing their education due to extreme circumstances.

If you are a Pi Phi in need, or know a Pi Phi in need, the Emma Harper Turner Fund is available to offer assistance. Contact Emma Harper Turner Fund Chairman (EHTFundChair@pibetaphi.org) for more information.

An application for immediate disaster relief can be found here

In the news . . .

this message was posted today on the Pi Beta Phi website

Elementary School and Arrowmont to Benefit From Sale of Gatlinburg Property

Grand Council announced that Pi Beta Phi Elementary School located in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, will be the recipient of a $1 million gift, which is to be used for an endowment or to establish a foundation.

Pi Phi has also clarified their intentions for Arrowmont School of Art and Crafts. Contingent on the contract as currently written the crafts school stands to receive up to $9 million from the Fraternity.

For this and other information concerning the sale of the Gatlinburg property read the FAQ

Pi Phi for Life!

Pi Beta Phi .... Friends and Leaders for Life! How can you support collegians and show the life-long connection to Pi Phi if you don't have a local chapter nearby?

The Greater Charleston Area Alumnae Club is working on a new project this year. Rather than adopting an entire college chapter the club is supporting all of the undergraduate ladies from the Charleston area. "...We think this would be a great way to get the word out about us in the area, and to help recruit members who may return to our club as alumnae later on. We would like to send the ladies small letters and gift to show our support in Pi Beta Phi"

Pi Beta Phi in Negotiations With Gatlinburg Developer

Grand Council has informed Fraternity officers and former members of Grand Council that the Fraternity was approached by a party interested in purchasing Fraternity property currently leased to Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It is anticipated that an agreement may be reached as early as September. "This is an historic opportunity for Pi Phi and also for Arrowmont," said Grand President Emily Tarr. "Pi Phi came to Gatlinburg in 1912 to build a Settlement School with the mission of educating children. We were faithful to that mission until Sevier County assumed control of the school in 1968. Our work in Gatlinburg brought education, healthcare and economic development to the area. This development is another opportunity to benefit the community."

Pi Phi's efforts to assist the economic development of Gatlinburg began as an outlet for regional crafts and evolved into preservation and education for those artisan skills through the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Arrowmont became an independent corporation in 1991, but Pi Beta Phi Fraternity, Foundation, alumnae clubs, collegiate chapters and individuals have continued to support the school through generous financial contributions. Arrowmont holds great affection among members for its historical significance to the Fraternity. The members of the Arrowmont Board of Govenors are considering several options regarding the future of the crafts school.

"It's not an easy decision to leave Gatlinburg after almost 100 years," says Mrs. Tarr. "But our founders created Pi Phi to be a living, thriving organization with extension as a goal. We now have the opportunity to extend our literacy vision, but we will always be grateful for the opportunity to realize that vision in Gatlinburg. "

Recruitment Information

Pi Phi chapters are getting ready for recruitment. It is our hope that each club will support the collegiate chapters. This is a very important time for our collegians and anything you and your club can do to support these young women is greatly appreciated. Don't have a chapter nearby? ADOPT ONE! Not all our chapters have alumnae club support and this is a great way to our collegians the true meaning of Pi Phi for Life!

Guidelines:
If your club is sending RIFs, these should be sent to the chapter’s Vice President Membership. Contact the Vice President Communications to schedule dates and times if you wish to support the chapter by sending refreshments (meals, snacks, etc) during recruitment. Monetary donations for meals, flowers, etc. before and during recruitment should be directed to the House Corporation President. The chapter will be informed of your donation. Gift certificates (refreshments) during recruitment, please send these to the Chapter President. Any cards or letters of support or congratulations to the chapters can also be sent to the Chapter President.

Region 2 - Strategic Plan

It's August...the end of summer is fast approaching.
Time for back to school shopping, lounging by the pool, and the start of the new year for the Pi Beta Phi alumnae organizations. Club officers get together over the summer to plan the calendar year, programs, and membership goals. Your leadership team does the same thing!

We (Sande, Katie, and Marilyn) met over the weekend to work on strategic goals for the region.

What are we hoping to accomplish this year? Here are a few highlights ...

--Improve communications with Alumnae Organizations
*debut the regional blog
*continue to share membership and programming best practices
*phone conference with club president

--Increase Club Membership
*recruitment strategies
*using interest groups to diversify membership

--Fraternity Day of Service
*increase participation in day of service

--Leadership Development Opportunities
*encourage club members to attend convention
*present several "cluster" club workshops facilitated by regional team officers

2008-2009 is going to be a great year. We look forward to working with you.

Pi Beta Phi - Friends and Leaders for Life!
