Pi Beta Phi Makes its Mark on Literacy

On March 2, Pi Beta Phi celebrates its Fraternity Day of Service with its "Make Your Mark for Literacy" campaign. Alumnae organizations and chapters around the world will decorate bookplates to be place in brand-new books for children from low-income families. A total of 50,000 books will be distributed through Pi Phi's literacy partner First Book. For more information click here!

Chattanooga, TN - Fraternity Day of Service

The Chattanooga, TN Alumnae Club’s philanthropy recipient was Chattanooga Room in the Inn. The club donated preschool and activity books and presented the organization with a check to use toward their literacy and tutoring program. Chattanooga Room in the Inn provides help and hope to homeless women and children.

Pi Beta Phi Celebrates Founders' Day

In 1867, 12 Monmouth College students wished to enjoy the benefits of a secret society similar to those formed by collegiate men. On April 28, 1867, I.C. Sorosis was formed. More than 140 years later, those 12 women have touched the lives of more than 241,000 members across North America and have set the stage for a premier organization for women. Little Rock Alumnae Club - Fraternity Day of Service

The Little Rock Alumnae Club celebrated Dr. Seuss's Birthday, March 2 by taking books, drinks, and smiley face cookies to the Fair park Early Childhood Center. The club members read Dr. Seuss and other books to the classes and played games with them. All children and teachers were dressed in pajamas for Dr. Seuss's birthday. The club donated 60 books to their library. The books were brought by alumnae to their annual Christmas Mother/Daughter holiday party. This is a preschool that the Little Rock School District operates at no cost to parents. It is for four year olds. We read to seven classes of children.

Spring Spotlight: Fraternity Day of Service! This annual Pi Beta Phi event unites members of all ages through our effort to advance literacy.

Pi Beta Phi’s Literacy Vision:Pi Beta Phi is dedicated to philanthropic and community service efforts that will remove the barrier of illiteracy.

How can alumnae organizations support the fraternity literacy vision? Alumnae support literacy in a number of ways: through unique partnerships with organizations on a local and international level, through financial support, through club programming and so much more.

Why Literacy?

People who can read tend to be more successful and have more earning capacity.
Literate parents set their children up for successful and healthy lives.
Illiteracy is a factor in the rate of homelessness, domestic abuse, poverty and lack of healthcare.
80 percent of citizens in prison didn’t finish high school; half of those can’t read or write at all.
Increasing high school graduation rates by just one percent would save $1.4 billion in costs associated with jails and prisons.

Pi Phi continues to support literacy and education for children and families. Pi Beta Phi will once again be celebrating Fraternity Day of Service with the Make your Mark for Literacy Bookplate campaign. Your event should be planned on or around March 2, 2010 — Dr. Seuss’ birthday!

After last year’s Fraternity Day of Service, many Pi Phi alumnae clubs provided Headquarters with feedback about their events. Many groups began planning their events months in advance. Because of this, we wanted to get your bookplates to you even earlier to make your planning easier.

All alumnae clubs will receive 50 bookplates for their 2010 Fraternity Day of Service project. For those clubs planning large events, we would be happy to send your club additional bookplates. Please e-mail Special Events Coordinator Julie Ravensberg at julier@pibetaphi.org to order. Additional bookplates will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

League of Women Voters celebrates 90 years

Ninety years ago, Carrie Chapman Catt* first proposed a League of Women Voters to "finish the fight" and work to end all discrimination against women. And so the League of Women Voters was founded on Valentine's Day in 1920, six months before the ratification of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote.

The North Carolina Triangle Alumnae Club hosted its third annual Holiday Heritage Tea at The Carolina Inn, Chapel Hill, NC on December 13, 2009. The afternoon was filled tasting new teas, sampling sweet and savory treats and socializing with sisters.

Philanthropy and Literacy was the theme of the event and there was a fun corresponding program for the attendees. The Pi Phis were arranged into teams, with a team captain, and then participated in a Pi Beta Phi Literacy Timeline “Scramble”

Each team captain was given a list of dates and scrambled Pi Beta Phi literacy initiatives. The women were asked to match-up the literacy program with the correct date. After the team captains presented their answers the entire group discussed the dates with the matching initiative. It was an interactive way to highlight Pi Beta Phi’s commitment to literacy. For almost 100 years, Pi Bet Phis have been helping children and families read. It is an incredible feat and one that continues to grow. The literacy timeline was pulled from the Pi Beta Phi website and the Fraternity Heritage Manual: Arrows, Angels and Admiration.

The tea was a lovely event. The women enjoyed the Pi Phi Fellowship and it was nice time to reflect on Pi Beta Phi’s dedication to literacy and it’s almost century of innovative programs.

Nashville's Christmas Village - this weekend!

Nashville Alumnae Club's Christmas Village is this weekend at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. The event is celebrating its 49th anniversary. Best wishes to the Pi Phi alumnae donating their time and talents to make this a successful event!

Berenice Miller Denton and Barbara White Fridrich, co-chairs of the 1961 Christmas Village set the precedent for success. The one day event raised $1,020.

Christmas Village donated more than $427,000 in 2008 to various philanthropic projects. The event is currently recognized as a premier consumer show that attracts more than 25,000 shoppers.

Pi Beta Phi Earns 2009 Nonprofit PR Partner of the Year Honorable Mention

Pi Beta Phi and First Book^® were honored for their philanthropic efforts to promote reading and eliminate the barrier of illiteracy at the PR News’ Nonprofit PR Awards luncheon on Tuesday, November 3, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Pi Beta Phi was selected as a finalist in early October for the Nonprofit Partner of the Year in the Social Responsibility Campaign category.

The Fraternity, in conjunction with Pi Beta Phi Foundation, was nominated along with six other nominees including: The Allstate Foundation, Bank of America, the U.S. Postal Service, Delta Dental of Missouri, CVS Caremark/Weber Shandwick, and Katz & Associates. The Allstate Foundation & Zeno Group won the Nonprofit PR Partner of the Year for its “Tell a Gal P.A.L.,” a 2008 domestic violence awareness campaign, and Pi Beta Phi and First Book earned honorable mention for their partnership and campaign to fight illiteracy.

“Pi Beta Phi was elated to be nominated alongside so many nonprofit organizations and their well-deserving awareness campaigns,” said Grand Vice President Programming Linda Noel Ibsen. “Our dedication to education and literacy began nearly 100 years ago, and over the last two years our partnership with First Book has put us closer to reaching our literacy vision, which is to eliminate the barrier of illiteracy.”

In the U.S., there are an estimated 200,000–300,000 community literacy programs serving children in need. Yet, 80 percent of these programs do not have a single book for the children they serve. Together, First Book and Pi Beta Phi’s extensive member network have helped connect programs serving children in need offering them permanent access to new books and resources, creating systemic change in the educational levels for children in need. This year alone, Pi Beta Phi has sponsored the distribution of more than 500,000 new books to children in need through the partnership, more than doubling their commitment to provide 250,000 books. Pi Beta Phi’s seamless integration of First Book in the culture of their organization has delivered more than 1.2 million books to children in need in the last two years.

Florida Clubs visit local Arrowmont Artist Exhibit

Clearwater and St. Petersbur, Florida alumnae club members recently spent a day at the Dunedin Fine Art Center. From April 17 - May 22 the Dunedin's exhibit was "craft-ed". The Fine Arts Center described the exhibit as "works by emerging artists of Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts.....nestled in Tennessee's Smoky Mountains, Arrowmont's 50 year old history of enriching lives through the arts mirrors our own commitment to education and transformation".

Pat Moriarity, Clearwater Alumnae Club President shares, "this exhibit gave local Pi Phis an opportunity to share our pride in Arrowmont".

New Collegiate Chapter

Pi Beta Phi is proud to announce its 134th collegiate chapter at the University of Cincinnati.

Three National Panhellenic Conference organizations were invited to compete for the opportunity to start a chapter on campus, and Pi Beta Phi was chosen to colonize.

The Ohio Kappa Chapter will participate in formal recruitment in the fall.

Founders' Day Celebration

Pi Beta Phi's Lowcountry alumnae club recently gathered at the home of member Mae Tavernetti. Located in the heart of South Carolina's sea islands, Mae's home was a picturesque setting for this celebration.

Members enjoyed a salad and dessert luncheon. During the business meeting the 2009-2010 club officers were installed, Golden Arrows were recognized, and Pi Phi's founders were honored.

Alumnae club member Lisa Crafton supplied gourmet cupcakes from her bakery. Susie Walker shared, "the cupcakes were divine. I got the "Elvis Presley" - a peanut butter and banana creation and managed to sample others too".

Club members honored the founders and it was fitting to have club member Dr. Lindsey Bell recite the name of Jennie Nicol, M.D.

Dinner was adjourned in time for everyone to rush home to watch American Idol and vote for Conway's own Kris Allen!

The North Carolina Triangle Alumnae Club celebrated Fraternity Day of Service with the Brentwood Boy & Girls Club of Raleigh.

Pi Beta Phi alumnae members donated books to the Boys & Girls Club and read favorite Dr. Seuss’ stories to the children.

The six to nine year olds decorated the “Make your Mark on Literacy” bookplates for First Book.

The afternoon activity focused on literacy and both the children and the volunteers had a wonderful time!

Earlier this week, Pi Phis in the bluegrass state lent a hand to First Book.

Members of the Louisville Alumnae Club and collegiate members of Kentucky Alpha (University of Louisville) packed up brand new books and assisted in labeling the packages. The recipients of the books are low-income populations.

General Registration Information
To qualify for Early Bird Rates, register online by April 1, 2009.
All other attendees must be registered by May 1, 2009.

Alumnae Club Voting and Alternate Delegate Guideline
-Dues-paying member for last two years
-Must stay in the convention hotel and be a full-time attendee (June 26–30)
-Must register by May 1, 2009, to receive club allotment
-If the delegate does not attend entire convention, the club allotment will be pro-rated
-Must attend all scheduled official events
-Details on eligibility for receiving the club allotment can be found in the Alumnae Organization Treasurer section in the Resource Library

How to register?
You will need to log in to the Members-Only section of the web site. If you’re having trouble logging in, please send your request via e-mail to webmaster@pibetaphi.org.

How do I know which package to choose?
Detailed instructions are given and a description for each registration option is listed with each package during the registration process.

How much is the alumnae organization allotment?
For the 2009 convention, eligible alumnae organizations can receive $750 for full-time registration or $375 for part-time registration. Part-time attendance must be approved by the grand vice president alumnae. The allotment may be used to offset the total expense a delegate may incur including convention and hotel registration.

When can we expect to receive the allotment if our club is eligible?
Headquarters will begin mailing out the allotments to clubs in late April/early May.

Orlando-Winter Park celebrates Fraternity Day of Service

The Orlando-Winter Park Alumnae Club partnered with a local Girl Scout troop to celebrate Pi Beta Phi's Fraternity Day of Service. Pi Phis were honored guests at this scout meeting. Each scout decorated at least 2 bookplates. One bookplate was decorated in the spirit of a favorite book with the second selection a creative free-for-all. This activity also helped the scouts earn their books badge.

The club also collected NEW children's books for Kids House of Seminole, an organization that protects abused children.

Pi Beta Phi's Philanthropy & Community Service Report is released each calendar year, and the information is reported by each of Pi Phi's 132 chapters. Some 2008 highlights:

Northshore Louisiana Celebrates Fraternity Day of Service

Mandeville, LA. -- March 8, 2009 – The Pi Beta Phi Northshore Alum Club held a bookplate signing at Barnes and Noble in Mandeville as part of its national Fraternity Day of Service. Both children and adults signed and decorated bookplates which will be placed in books distributed to underprivileged children through the First Book Program.

The Northshore Alumnae Club further promoted literacy by sponsoring the Champions Are Readers (CAR) program for third-graders at Folsom Elementary last fall. CAR is a month-long reading enrichment program designed to supplement reading activities that schools already provide. The program targets third-grade students who are at a critical juncture in developing good reading skills and a life-long love of reading.

The Fraternity’s commitment to literacy dates back almost 100 years to the founding of a settlement school in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Pi Phi was solely responsible for all education in Gatlinburg from 1912–1969. Now Pi Beta Phi members support literacy in their communities and through programs such as the Fraternity Day of Service, the Champion’s are Readers^® (CAR) program and the Fraternity’s partnership with First Book^®.

Louisville Alumnae Club

The Louisville Alumnae Club celebrated the National Day of Service at a local elementary school. Alumnae read to 200+ students (kindergarten - second grade).

Club members unable to attend send in delicious treats for the students to enjoy. The Dr. Seuss inspired "green eggs" sugar cookies were a hit!

The Louisville Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club was so well received that an invitation to return in 2010 was already extended!

Literacy tool-kits will be included in the spring mailing (goes out to all club presidents). Check your mailbox, they will be arriving prior to 2/21.

Still looking for ideas for the Fraternity Day of Service? Our friends in Region 6 shared their plans for wonderful programming events.

North San Diego, CA will hold a food and book drive at their meeting to benefit a refuge for battered women and their children. All donations will be delivered on their day of service.

The San Jose, CA Club will hold a First Book Speed Read event at Barnes & Noble March 1. After they will gather at a local coffee shop and have our book club gathering. The following day, they'll kick off their Champions are Readers program with two 3rd grade classrooms helping the club decorate bookplates.

The Arizona Area Council (Phoenix, Arrowhead-West and Tucson) along with three collegiate chapters, will unite on Saturday, February 28 at selected Barnes & Noble store locations throughout the state. At each site, Pi Phis will promote literacy awareness by inviting the public to personalize a Pi Beta Phi/First Book bookplate.

Valley of the Moon, CA will have students in their two CAR programs decorate bookplates. They found last year that the children just loved the idea that their artwork on the bookplates would be sent to other children who would be receiving new books.

La Jolla, CA will join with CA Kappa (UCSD) for a day of service at a local YMCA or possibly with family of service men and women.

Member clubs of the Southern CA Area Council and six collegiate chapters will join together at Santa Anita Race Park for a Speed Read, bookplate decorating, BBQ, horse racing, fancy hat contest and much more!

San Francisco and Contra Costa, CA will join with CA Beta (UC Berkeley) collegians for a luncheon, Speed Read, and a Cookie Shine.

During their regular club meeting, Palm Springs/Desert Cities, CA will be decorating/coloring the bookplates.

The Long Beach, CA Club will have a bookplate-decorating event at a local Barnes & Noble and are considering including a bookmark to take home and possibly reading to children.

Along with bookplate decorating, the Marin County, CA Club supports the Marin Literacy Program, which operates throughout the county, especially in the rural areas where libraries are not available. They honor them at a luncheon, give them a financial contribution and help with fundraisers

Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton will benefit from a visit by the South Orange County, CA Club. Children of our service men and women will decorate bookplates and receive free books and treats.

This annual Fraternity-wide event takes place in March and unites Pi Phi's membership in an effort to advance literacy. Chapters and clubs raise funds and/or books through service events that benefit their communities.

In 2009, Pi Phi again will partner with First Book® for the "Make Your Mark for Literacy" campaign. The goal is to donate another 50,000 books. Alumnae organizations, collegiate chapters and their communities can help us achieve this goal by decorating bookplates and sending them back to Headquarters. A Fraternity Day of Service tool kit, which includes the blank bookplates, will arrive in the mail in the spring.

For every bookplate Headquarters recieves, one child will receive a brand-new book from First Book.

What can I do this season to promote literacy?

Make a donation on First Book’s^® Web site in December, and Random House Children’s Books will match your donation. Your gift will count twice!

Instead of the traditional gift exchange between friends, have everyone donate brand-new books to a local nonprofit program serving underprivileged youth.

Send flowers to the hostess of your holiday party from 1-800-FLOWERS.COM^TM. For every purchase made, some of the proceeds come back to the Fraternity to support Fraternity programming, including various literacy projects.

Shop for friends and family at The Literacy Site. For every purchase, a donation of books is generated. Browse the site and you will find jewelry, clothing and accessories from various designers.

Above all else … just read! Read to your children or younger siblings. Or, think about volunteering your time to read to children in the hospital or at a local shelter.

In January Pi Beta Phi will welcome a new chapter - Mississippi Gamma at Mississippi State University.

Alumnae Clubs are invited to help make our new members feel extra special by providing treats for goodie bags. Goodie Bags will be presented to members during a Bid Day celebration (Jan 25) and at a Cookie Shine (April 3). . These gifts of support can range from simple notes of welcome to a small item purchased by the club. We are anticipating 125-150 new members!

If your club would like to participate in this endeavor, please mail items for the Bid Day Goodie Bag by January 15 and items for the Cookie Shine Goodie Bag by March 23. Everything should be sent to Jessica - Leadership Development Consultant for MS Gamma.

All dues-paying members receive hard copies of the remaining three issues, and members who have not paid their dues receive e-mail notices and links to the Winter, Spring and Summer Arrows on the Web site. If you suspect your mailing and e-mail addresses may not be current, please notify Headquarters so we may update your information.

"Building Memories, Old and New" the Casper Club alumnae will share old memories together as they make new ones throughout the year.

The Lake Oswego Club is doing their part for the environment and the local organization Start Making a Reader Today (SMART) with their theme ‘Going Green … Getting SMART’

‘Simply Sisterhood’ says it all for the Salt Lake City Club, who are streamlining their programming and focusing on what’s really important.

It’s fun and games for the Aurora Club with their game theme this year as they ask alumnae ‘Are you the missing piece?’

The Seattle Club will transport alumnae to various times and locations at each event throughout the year with their ‘Passport to Pi Phi’ theme.

A great way to pull together your programming and events and to make things interesting is to put together a Pi Phi theme. Check back every day this week for club spotlights to see Pi Phi creativity at its best!

The McKinney, Texas Alumnae Club is using a "Hollywood" and "silver screen" theme for their programs. Check out the club website for the clever meeting titles and see how they carried it over to the interest groups!

The first meeting of the year was the Premiere. The October CAR (Champions are Readers) event was called Night at the OsCARS. The Little Angels interest group (group for Moms with preschool age children) had their first event at the pool. What was it called? SPLASH, of course! Click on this link to see more.

Pi Phi Welcomes 41 New Members at MIT

Pi Beta Phi recently welcomed 41 new members at their newest chapter, Massachusetts Gamma, located at MIT.

“This is an amazing group of women at MIT. Each woman will bring to the group and Pi Phi a diverse and fresh perspective and we look forward for things to come,” said Luellen Smith, grand vice president membership for the Fraternity.

New Members will participate in a six week New Member program. Initiation and Installation of the new chapter will occur in mid-November. For more information, visit MA Gamma's Web site: www.pibetaphi.org/mit.

How did Arkansas alumnae help celebrate? The Little Rock alumnae club created a fun and festive way to attend the Balfour presentation. They chartered the "Balfour Bus" & trekked 3 1/2 hours from Little Rock to Fayetteville!
